Blog: Technology As An Organizing Tool
Google Docs
When one of my clients recently wanted to develop a tracking system which either of us could view and edit online, I immediately thought of Google Docs, even though I'd never used it before. It turned out to be just what the doctor ordered!
Google Docs includes word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation programs which are all web-based. Once you create and save a file, you can make it public, keep it private, or give access to selected users. When giving someone access, you can either give them editing rights or simply allow them to view the information.
What is really cool is that you can both be working on the file at the same time, with no risk of overwriting each other's work. There's even a discussion window where you can text chat about the document you're working on.
Of course, these programs don't have all the bells and whistles of Microsoft Office, but for many applications, they'll do the job just nicely.
