Blog: Technology As An Organizing Tool
RSS Really Is Simple!
A few years ago, a client asked me whether she should start a blog or an ezine. At the time, I discouraged her from starting a blog for a number of reasons. One of the reasons I gave her was that an ezine would be delivered directly to her readers' inboxes, whereas they would have to remember to go and visit her blog unless they used an RSS reader. To be honest, I wasn't really sure what an RSS reader was, but I figured that if a computer geek like me didn't have one, the chances that the people she was hoping to reach would be using one were pretty slim.
Eventually I did jump onto the blogging bandwagon, to the point where I now write regularly for three different blogs, and have assisted a number of clients with blog set-up, customization, and management.
I also came to understand that an important part of blogging is reading other blogs and posting comments, but I had difficulty fitting it into my schedule on a regular basis. Occasionally I would go through the blogs listed in my Blogroll and check for new postings but it was pretty hit-or-miss and I didn't feel it was very effective. Earlier this year I was delighted to discover Blog Friends, but it only gave me access to other bloggers who were using it, and it has since been discontinued. I knew it was time for me to finally bite the bullet and set up an RSS reader.
I set aside time to set it up, knowing that it would more than pay for itself in the time I'd save, and that it would help me to be a more productive blogger. Much to my delight, I didn't have to download any software or sign up for another online account, because My Yahoo! has an RSS reader built right in, and nearly every blog I read allows you to add its feed to My Yahoo! with just one or two clicks of the mouse. The whole process only took a few minutes. Had I realized how easy it would be, I would have done it months ago. Now I have no excuse not to stay on top of my blog reading!
