Blog: Child + Organized = Academic Success
Organized for Success
As an adult, dealing with disorganization can cause minutes, hours, and even days of frustration due to misplaced items, forgetting appointments, and not having effective systems put into place. This disorganization affects a person's personal and professional life. When there is chaos and a lack of order in the home, this state of disorganization is easily transferred into professional affairs and space. Look back into your childhood, where you taught how to properly organize your bedroom closet, toy box, backpack or desk? Did you have a personal planner and a system for taking effective notes in class? Where you aware of the rewards of developing organizational skills? These skills were rarely taught in school and most likely you learned to mirror your parent's disorganization and poor attempts at managing time.
Children learn at a young age these overwhelming frustrations when they are unable to locate a favorite toy, can't find a homework assignment, or when they missed the school bus due to poor time management. These negative experiences assist in forming a child's academic confidence, esteem, and motivation. Getting a zero and missing an assignment can have a huge negative impact on a child's grade.
The need to be organized is growing every year. According to the 2004 study by Public Agenda, a nonpartisan opinion research organization reporting on public policy issues, today's children are more time crunched than ever, with 57 percent of all middle and high schoolers participating in an after-school activity almost every day of the week. Listed below are situations that may be signs that a child is having problems with organization and planning.
-
Fails to turn in completed homework assignments
-
Does not know the exact homework assignments
-
Fails to bring home needed books and other homework related material
-
Does not know when homework assignments are due
-
Runs out of time when studying for tests
-
Waits until the last minute to start homework/studying
-
Does not have a regular study space
-
Has trouble locating school supplies in their backpack or desk
Through developing effective systems for paper management, managing assignments and personal planners, and having a defined place to study, students can avoid the problems listed above. Parents play an important role in their child's development of these skills. With the support, discipline, and motivation from the parents and consistent practice from the child, the child can greatly increase their chances of academic success. Some experts consider teaching children organizational and time-management skills as fundamental as instructing them about morals and values. A child that develops these skills early on is likely to implement the skills into their adult life which increases their chance for success in their career, relationships, and personal interests.
This blog is to educate parents on ways they can guide and assist their children in developing organizational and time-management skills. Organization is a prerequisite for academic success. The most successful students are organized students.
