Battling Time Wasters

Yesterday on Twitter, my tip for the day was to keep a time log for a few days so that people can identify where they are spending time passively (AKA wasting time). A major complaint I hear from clients is there just aren't enough hours in a day to get everything done.  Well, we aren't going to get the day any longer than it is, but there are simple strategies you can employ to make the hours in your day more productive.  Here are a few:

  • Delegate.  There is no rule that we, as busy parents, have to do it all.  That is a myth that we perpetuate.  If there are things that are taking time away from tasks that only you can do, let someone else do them. That someone else can be your spouse, your kids or a professional.
  • Swap.  There are plenty of things that you excel at that your friends don't and vice versa.  So, if you are the menu planning genius and your friend has extra time to grocery shop- share the duties.  Be creative.
  • Plan.  Don't wait until you are out of milk and cereal to go to the store.  Have a routine so that the things you need are always on hand and you aren't wasting time running errands that weren't on your schedule in the first place.  If a holiday is coming up, make sure to ask your child if a party in their classroom is planned and if they need to bring anything.  That way you can pick up the juice boxes, etc as part of your routine shopping trip instead of a last night run to the convenience store up the street.
  • Make the most of down time.  If you are going to be sitting at soccer practice for an hour and have a book to read for your book club meeting, a presentation to read for work, a blog post to write (whatever it may be) plan to do the task during the practice time.  If you have trouble finding time for exercise in your busy schedule, take a brisk walk while your child is at dance.
  • Audit.  There are things we have all agreed to out of guilt or obligation that suck our time and energy dry and leave us little time for the things that are important to us.  Let those things go and resist the urge to say yes to anymore.

Happy Organizing!
