Organizing the Fridge

I will never forget the day that I took a mysterious box out of our freezer and discovered a dog turd (no, I am not making this up) inside. When asked what would possess my youngest (I immediately knew it was him) to put this item IN.MY.FREEZER he replied "I wanted to know what would happen if it froze".  After correcting him firmly and telling him he could find out such things outside in the winter I proceeded to empty and scrub my freezer.

The refrigerator/freezer in any busy home gets used and abused a lot.  It is important for cleanliness, ease of finding things and energy efficiency to keep your fridge clean and organized.  Here are some of my favorite tips for doing just that:

  • Clean out your fridge completely at least once a month.  Throw away things like condiments that have expired.  Take everything out and wipe down the shelves and drawers with warm, soapy water.  Dry thoroughly before you put items back.
  • To keep things organized and easy to find, group them by type of item and frequency of use.  My kids drink a lot of milk and we use a lot of eggs.  Therefore, neither of those things should be in the back where I will have to move four things to get to it.
  • Have a shelf or area just for leftovers.  I use masking tape to write the date the item went in the fridge so that three days later, if it hasn't been eaten, I can pitch it.  That keeps you from finding the grey covered mystery meat weeks later when you are cleaning out the fridge.
  • The door is not the best place for eggs, milk, etc.  Even though the manufacturer wants you to put items there, the door is the warmest place in the fridge.  Dairy products need to stay cool to stay fresh.
  • If you can have an extra fridge in the garage or basement for sodas and beverages.  This will save a lot of room in the main fridge.
  • Do an internet search for how long items should be kept in the freezer.  Make sure that you aren't taking up precious storage space for hot dogs that should have been used or thrown out months ago.
