Creative Storage Solutions for Scrapbook Supplies
I'm a big advocate of use-what-you-have organizing. Using on-hand containers will not only save you some cash, but it can also help you create a one-of-a-kind space, loaded with inspiration and fun. In my space, for example, I converted a ceramic tray and nine ceramic votive holders to store my metal attachments. I also use a wooden lazy Susan plus a variety of mason jars, white soup bowls and white beans to keep my often used supplies close at hand.
When you seek out storage solutions, either by shopping at home or at your local retailer, remember to buy containers for specific items. It works best if you know what you need to store, the dimension of your items, and how many items you need to store, before buying a container or set of containers.
Whenever possible use a single container for an entire category of items. For example, one box for all your Christmas stamps, as opposed to breaking the collection into multiple containers.
So let's do some shopping at home this week, looking for some storage vessels you can repurpose to fill your space with order and inspiration. Here are some ideas to whet your appetite.
-
Glass jars – spice, mayo, cracker, Mason, olive, pickle and baby food jars make great containers for storing all sorts of embellishments and supplies. The smaller jars are perfect for brads and buttons, while larger ones make a great home for everything from ribbons to rubber stamps. For a uniform display of mismatched containers, spray paint the lids a single color.
-
Canister sets and cookie jars. If you're only using a couple of your canisters—the sugar and flour ones, for example, enlist the help of the other two canisters to corral bulky scrapbook items. Canisters make a nice home for items like punches or even wooden stamps. When using opaque containers like canisters, tie a ribbon and tag to the outside of the container so you'll know what's stored inside.
-
Ice cube trays are handy for holding all sorts of small embellishments like buttons, brads or even small, silk flowers. They're inexpensive (and stackable!) and if you have an ice maker in your freezer, you likely already have some on hand.
-
Small muffin tins make for a great, open storage solution for small items like chipboard, paper clips, brads and other attachments.
-
Miniature galvanized buckets make a stylish catchall for markers, pens, pencils, fibers on floss cards, chipboard, and punches. Galvanized buckets can be found at your local dollar store, IKEA and often at Target's Dollar spot.
-
Many individually wrapped snack items come in nice, little, sturdy cardboard boxes. Cover these boxes, shoe boxes or a copy paper box with scrapbook paper or plain Kraft paper for a free and stylish container. Boxes are terrific for corralling all sorts of scrapbook supplies...from punches, to chipboard or stickers.
With a little imagination, you can use vessels you already have on hand to create a bit of order and inspiration in your scrapbook space! Happy organizing!
