Password Management Made Easy
If you're an avid Internet user, you've probably signed up for a lot of websites - forums, blogs, banking, shopping, email, and so on – and keeping track of all your user names and passwords can be a real challenge.
One solution adopted by many people is to use the same user name and password for everything. Not only is this not a good idea for security reasons, it's not always an option, as some websites want you to sign in using your email address, and others with a user name. Password requirements also vary in length and whether you can (or have to!) use both letters and numbers, and although sometimes you can choose your own, often one is assigned to you.
So what do you do? You could allow your browser to remember the information, but what if your computer crashes, you buy a new system, or a Windows update clears your cookies (which happened to me a couple of weeks ago)?
After reading about a product called RoboForm, which was recommended by several of my colleagues at VAnetworking.com, I decided I would check it out by downloading their free 30-day trial, and it didn't take me long to jump on the bandwagon!
RoboForm not only securely stores all of your user names and passwords, you can organize them into whatever categories you choose to create, e.g., Affiliate Programs, Financial, Networking, Website. A toolbar is added to your browser (it works on both Internet Explorer and Firefox) and you simply click on the desired website, and you are automatically taken to that site and logged into your account.
I'm actually using a version called RoboForm2Go which you install on a USB key rather than on your hard drive. This allows you to access your information on any computer – a big plus if you don't always work on the same one.
This isn't one of those services that you sign up for and once you're hooked, the price goes up. The price is very reasonable, and it's software that you buy, so there's no yearly fee.
It's definitely one of those things that I'm kicking myself for not trying months (or even years) ago!
