Clear Your Space Through Feng Shui

The benefit of being organized is not just about being able to find things easily or making work more efficient. In Feng Shui "the Chinese art of placement", organization and de-cluttering a space is a necessity for a healthy flow of ENERGY.
YOUR ENERGY FLOW

In Feng Shui, how a room, home or business FEELS greatly influences how you feel when you live or work. The feeling we get when we walk into a room is a direct response to the energy around you. Have you been able to feel the electricity in the air if an angry argument has just occurred, or someone has just announced a happy engagement? These events create specific reactions from people because the flow of energy is changed and it is palpable to all who enter. When I would visit clients in their homes or businesses, they would often tell me they feel STUCK or they can’t seem to move forward with their lives. This can be in direct response to a lack of organization and the clutter of too much "stuff".
HOW CLUTTER BLOCKS YOUR ENERGY

Having things around you that do not serve you anymore will leave the feeling of being OVERWHELMED and heavy. The principles of Feng Shui guide us to letting go of the things that no longer serve us. Feng Shui uses metaphors in life. What message are you sending Universe by having too much clutter in the house? If there is too much, there is not ROOM for anything new to come in.
LETTING GO

A good rule of thumb is to keep the things that you are using or are useful to you, and the things you feel are beautiful and you feel good when you look at them. Thank everything else for serving you in the PAST, and send it on it’s way to someone else that can really BENEFIT from it. Some examples include:
RELATIONSHIP CLUTTER

Divorced couples or people that have ended a relationship keep too many things from the former relationship and they can’t seem to move forward. These things serve as a REMINDER of the past and they remain stuck there. When bedroom closets and drawers are too full of clothes that are never worn, there is no room for a new relationship to come into your life.
FILING CLUTTER

Businesses that have files too full are telling the Universe that they don’t NEED anymore business because there isn’t room for new files. If a business is full of unnecessary things or "old" business, finances may fail.
CREATING SYSTEMS

The action of storing and labeling things properly does allow for more time and efficiency, and this makes you feel better because you are not FRUSTRATED for not being able to find something. Make an investment in the things you keep by knowing exactly what you have and "own" them.
SOME BREATHING ROOM

An empty corner is a quiet corner. Let your room and eye breathe and rest by not having things on every square inch of a mantle, tabletop or shelf. I spent twenty-five years in retail, working with storeowners and managers merchandise their products. Group the things you have together and leave SPACES between them. Tell little stories with the things you have. Let the eyes rest.
THE GIFTS WE RECEIVE

Did a friend or relative GIVE you something that just does not feel good to have around? All items hold energy so there may be a reason you do not like having that item in your possession. It may be time to send it on to someone else.
THE FIRST STEP

The first step of de-cluttering a space is the hardest, but it is very gratifying and FREEING. The action of having things in your space that only support and serve you creates balance and harmony in the space. Break the job or de-cluttering and organization down into fifteen-minute intervals. Don’t overwhelm yourself, but you may find you can’t stop once you get started.
FRESHEN AS YOU DECLUTTER

Another benefit of clearing out clutter is a HEALTHY one. Every time I clear a drawer, closet or room, my nose will run as I am also clearing toxins from my body at the same time. The two actions go very hand in hand. Once you have finished the process of eliminating the things that are not serving you, take it the last step and clear the AIR as well. Burn white sage, or spray a blend of lemongrass, eucalyptus and rosemary essential oils mixed with water to clear negativity from a room.
LESS IS MORE

Space clearing is easy and way the room feels when you are done is awesome. Less truly is more from a Feng Shui point of view. Owning FEWER things creates a calm, peace and simplification of life. Allow things to be around you that you love and find to be useful and you are on your way to a calmer, happier life.
