Shred to your heart's content

Paper. It's everywhere, isn't it? I mean, it's not bad enough we get it from Mister or Ms. Postal person. It comes at me from so many places.

I recently went on a "paper pick-up" around my house. Here are some of the random items I uncovered:
  • Bulletin from Sunday's church service
  • Funny joke that had been sent to us via email from a loving family member (don't you just love all those jokes that your retired family members find so much time to pass on??!!)
  • Napkin from a local fast food place. Now I know this isn't paper per se, but it's close enough!
  • My son's homework assignment sheet.
  • My son's homework assignment booklet.  (Note: I never saw any completed homework.)
  • Coupons that had recently come in the mail
  • Postcard from my dentist, reminding me of my check-up due.
  • Postcard from the dentist, reminding my daughter of her check-up due.
  • Postcard from the dentist, reminding our son of his check-up due.
  • Grocery list that had never quite gotten used.
  • A phone number scribbled on a notepad. Not sure who it belongs to.
  • A few magazines and catalogs that I know I'll NEVER read.
  • A few magazines and catalogs that I'd like to read…if someday ever comes.
  • And a huge stack of college mailings recently sent to our son.

Most of these items could easily be tossed. However, a few needed to be shredded. I now shred any item with our name and address on it. Even if it doesn't have any account information on it. The best place to locate a shredder is wherever you sort your mail.

Our company once worked with a gentleman who sorted his mail, standing in his garage, standing at his large garbage bin. Guess where we placed his paper shredder? You got it! In his garage, right next to his garbage bin. The idea is to make it convenient to shred so you aren't tempted to throw an item in the garbage.

I use a wicker basket that I throw my shredding items in. Then about once a month I sit in front of the shredder, with some music turned up super loud, and shred away. It's actually quite therapeutic.

If you don't own a shredder, what are you waiting for? Some collection agency to call you up claiming you owe them thousands of dollars when you have no idea what they're talking about? That's the kind of stuff you can look forward to if you're not careful these days.

Happy shredding!
