The next big trip...
Sometimes after a big trip, the last thing you could even consider thinking of is the next trip. But life is funny – we (humans) look forward to things and if you haven't got something lined up, then somehow life seems a little directionless. I was talking about what our next trips might be to our four year old and I mentioned camping (thinking ahead to spring and summer) and her eyes lit up and it was all she could do to stay at the dinner table and not bounce off her seat.
I let her know that we'd probably go later in the year – not that it's not possible to go camping at virtually any time of the year in Southern California. Last winter, we pushed it to the limit though when we decided to head to Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, inland from San Diego. We arrived at our campground the day after record winds in Los Angeles. It was still windy that evening and while Paul, Naomi and Bruce valiantly struggled to keep our tent from blowing away, moving many rocks into the tent and to attach guy ropes to, I, pregnant at the time, cooked in the vestibule. We got our meal, but 5 bent and 2 broken poles and 1 large rip in the tent later, we retired to the minivan. Thank goodness for "no rain" Southern California last winter. We took out the back seats, Paul and I slept lengthways and Naomi slept across the top. Bruce and his family slept in their smaller, wind-resistant New Zealand tent just fine.
And the point to take from the story – have gear appropriate for the conditions or be prepared with a contingency plan!
So we still haven't decided where our next few trips will be to, but they are bound to involve camping – and we're prepared with a new tent that was tested last year in Yellowstone and passed with flying colors.
