A kid's gotta do what a kid's gotta do.

February is Time Management Month. I've maintained for years now that when you have children, you have future time management assistants waiting to be trained.  You might be saying to yourself, "She doesn't know my kids!" Just hang in there with me.

When kids are toddlers, they approach mom or dad and invariably ask "Can I be your helper?" We think to ourselves that we could finish cleaning the bathroom in 10 minutes ourselves or we could spend the next thirty minutes mopping up their mess.

I guarantee you if you take the time when they are young to teach and train them, they will not expect you to be in charge of it when they get older. My kids began doing their own laundry in the second grade. That's right. Second grade. And as they grew older they never expected me to do it for them. It was their clothes. Their responsibility.

The same goes for our house cleaning. Our kids realize that we all use the bathrooms and walk on the floors. And guess what? The bathrooms and floors get dirty and need cleaning. They don't assume it's my job as the mom to clean.

If I had waited until my kids were pre-teen or adolescents, they would have viewed learning chores as punishment. But because they learned at such a young age they grew up with the understanding that they ARE capable of learning skills. And these are skills that carry them into adulthood, helping them be better prepared for the world facing them.

Living with teens,
