Countdown to your trip
BK (Before Kids) we used to be able to pack the night before we left to go somewhere (if we were leaving early) or even the day of if our departure time was later in the day. AK (After Kids), those days are gone, partly because it's hard to get more than 10 consecutive minutes at a time to focus on anything, partly because there are more people to pack for,and partly because, let's face it, it's easier to pack something if your toddler isn't 'helping' by playing the game of 'out of the bag' more than the game of 'in the bag.' There are some things you can do prior to your trip to make it easier on leaving day.
At least 2 weeks prior to trip - ensure any major equipment or items you need for the trip is repaired if necessary. Maybe order a special DVD for the kids if you're taking a DVD player for a long road trip.
At least 1 week prior to your trip - if you haven't already, start a trip folder. Put in it your itinerary, any maps you need, accommodations information, including telephone numbers and booking confirmation numbers, tickets if you're catching bulk transport, passports if you're leaving the country. Doing this early gives you time to hunt down any missing information without the threat of missing a flight as you frantically search for the address of the hotel you'll be staying at when you arrive late in the evening at your destination. If you don't have one, create an inventory of the items you will need on your trip. Start a shopping list of any missing necessary items. Make sure everyone gets a chance to add their needs. Add items over the next few days as you think of them.
5-6 days before your trip - arrange for your mail delivery to be suspended if you are going on a longer trip.
3-4 days before your trip - have a look at the long range forecast to get an idea of the weather on your departure day. Decide clothing for departure day. If the weather is unsettled, keep a couple of options open. Launder the outfits if they are dirty. Keep them separate to ensure they are clean for departure day. Start packing by first packing any items that you definitely won't need at home - e.g. swim wear for a trip to the Bahamas in winter. Check off any items that you have packed on your inventory.
2 days before your trip - have a final review of your shopping list and go shopping. Do your final laundry of clothing you will be taking with you.
1 day before your trip - complete your packing except for your toiletries. Include toys, coloring book and pencils or crayons, and any electronic gadgetery you're taking.
Day of the trip - pack toiletries, special toys. Voila - YOu're ready to go!
