Decide Now and Stay Motivated

Got a question for you. When confronted with any object or piece of mail that you haven't a clue what to do with, what do you actually do with that object or piece of paper?

Before you answer, let me just say this is a common dilemma most of us face on a regular basis. We're not sure if we'll need it, if it's necessary to keep, or just where to put it if we do keep it.

So what do you do? Most people opt to set it aside. Most likely in a pile. Most likely in a pile of other I-really-don't-know-what-to-do-with-this-or-where-to-put-it items. This actually works against our ability to feel motivated to take action. Let me explain.

Setting things aside for lack of a better choice affects not only our physical spaces but our mental wellbeing as well. These postponed decisions nag at us, begging for our attention. They are a constant reminder that we left some loose ends untied. They are waiting for us to find and make the time to finally sit down and deal with them. We have created more work for ourselves for an undetermined date and time.

Do you find yourself dreading the task of tackling these piles of postponed decisions? I'd like to suggest a way to stop this madness, or at least reduce it dramatically.

Starting today with the first item you come across that stumps you in regards to where it should go, whether or not you should keep it, or what you should do with it, make this determination: decide to DECIDE NOW.

When you decide that you are going to decide now and not set the item aside, you are freeing yourself from the anxiety that gathering piles create. You are choosing to save yourself the headache of dealing with a pile of indecisions at a later time -- and who knows when that time would ever come. You are choosing to stay current rather than creating a backlog. You are choosing to keep your space free of unwanted and unneeded clutter. You are choosing freedom!

Next time you are faced with something that stumps you, determine right there on the spot whether it's worth your time and trouble to keep, store, or file away. If it is, then take care of it immediately. If not, then out it goes!

When you decide to decide now, you are free from unnecessary mental clutter. When you try this for a spell, you'll find it so freeing you'll wish you've been doing this all along. Now that's a great way to stay motivated!

About Nancy:

I'm a mom, wife, professional organizing consultant and speaker, and a former Early Childhood educator. A personal crisis in my own life took me from perfectionism to total mayhem. I want neither. I'm now all about balance and being realistic about what I and my clients can maintain. My organizing business Real Solutions For Living was started to: 1) let people know they are not alone in their struggle to overcome clutter chaos, 2) to help them reduce their stress, 3) to help them gain back control of their spaces and lives, and 4) to offer realistic, practical, and down to earth solutions. I love what I do!
