Blog: Use Your Space & Conquer Office Workflow
Where do I Put My Desk?
The most common desk placement is also the least helpful in getting organized. Most people place their desk facing the wall, but this provides two challenges:
-
Very few people are inspired looking at a wall all day. If you don't enjoy sitting at your desk, it is hard to keep it organized
-
It is difficult to make use of the space at your back, behind your chair
If you place your desk perpendicular to the wall (e.g., at a right angle), and ideally 5 feet from the corner of the room, you will be able to:
-
Sit at your desk and look out into the room
-
Have enough room behind your chair for a file cabinet to sit against the wall
-
Have enough room behind your chair for a bookshelf to sit against the wall
Your goal is to have "command central" where you can access the files and reference materials you need without getting out of your swivel chair. If it is not easy and convenient to immediately file papers, we just don't do it. We need convenience.
We all need an organized office that allows us to be efficient, so we can focus on the most important aspects of our jobs and careers.
