My Love-Hate Relationship with my Pocket PC
When I bought my Pocket PC in 2004, I thought it was the greatest thing since sliced bread, and I couldn't wait to tell everyone about it.
Now that I work from my home office the majority of the time, it's not as important a tool as it was, but I still use it, mainly because it's the easiest way for me to keep track of my vehicle mileage without having to enter it into the computer at a later time.
Last year at this time, I found that although regular Windows updates made sure that my computer automatically adjusted to the new dates for Daylight Savings Time, my Pocket PC did not. Fortunately, I read an article in my local newspaper which offered a solution.
When I purchased a notebook to replace my desktop computer, I had some challenges getting the Pocket PC to synchronize with the new computer, and ended up formatting it, and after I had everything up and running realized I could have solved my problem without doing that. Unfortunately, when I did that, my Pocket PC naturally reverted to its default settings, so when Daylight Savings Time ended in the fall, it shifted all my appointment times. I was too busy to deal with it at the time, so I just tolerated it for the few weeks until "it" thought Daylight Savings Time had ended, and everything was fine again.
Now that my schedule has calmed down, I decided it was time to fix it up so I wouldn't have to deal with the same problem this month. I went back to my blog where I had posted the link I'd found in the newspaper and followed the instructions, but it didn't seem to have any effect. Further online research suggested that I needed to update to Active Sync 4.5, which I did, and was pleased to discover that my Pocket PC documents now sync automatically, just like my contacts, calendar, notes, and tasks, whereas I used to have to back them up manually.
Unfortunately, this had the effect of making my two units think they had never met before, and I found that tasks I'd already marked complete or deleted on my notebook since last synchronization were now showing up again, and of course they were showing as overdue. That was annoying, but not hard to fix. What was much more annoying was that all my calendar entries and contacts were now duplicated. This had happened to me previously (I don't remember what caused it that time) at which time I purchased MAPILab's Duplicates Remover for Outlook, so I was able to sort that out as well.
An hour after I started this whole process, my data was back the way I wanted it – except that all of my appointments from March 9 to 29 are still an hour off on my Pocket PC. I've had enough fun – I'm just going to ignore it.
