Do You Believe In The Two Certainties Of Life: Death And Taxes?
Congratulations it's October 16th!
Why congratulations? What's the big deal? Well, for some US taxpayers, yesterday was an annual event of sort. Some might even call it a day of reckoning. For millions of American families their tax filing extensions have now expired. Mention taxes, filing deadlines, or even the IRS and it causes moans from the masses. For that same reason I hesitate to mention the dreaded issue. Well, there is no need to run 'n hide or cover your eyes I promise there are no boring tax rules here, just a little fun.
Based upon my experiences it seems that people fall into one of three 'personalities' when it comes to filing their personal tax returns, and I believe that we can all learn something from our fellow taxpayer's. So as you read begin to ask yourself, 'Where Do You Fall On the Scale?'
Are You an 'Edith the Extension' Filer? Every year Edith says, "What do you mean April 15th is tax day? I thought my taxes were not due until October." For Edith, the arrival of October 15th signals the day she will finally file her return. According to the IRS website posting on October 5, 2007 (www.irs.gov/newsroom/article/0,,id=174646,00.html) nearly 10.2 million people requested an automatic extension to file their personal income taxes.
Are you a "Midnight Margaret 'Filer? Midnight Margaret simply loves the adrenaline rush of waiting in the post office line at 11:50pm or she simply tries to beat the clock when submitting an electronic report. Year after year Margaret makes the April 15th deadline, but not without wrecking havoc on her week and family!
Are you a 'Prepared Pattie' Filer? Many dream of becoming like Pattie. She's not perfect just prepared! Pattie tends to think of April 15th as yet another day. It is simply time to check the status of her return she filed a few weeks back. How can you spot Pattie? One sure fire way to spot her is that she already collecting this year's tax documents and records.
In the spirit of fairness let's not point fingers at Edith, Margaret, or even Pattie. We all have our strengths and opportunities for improvement. Over the next few weeks we will talk about what we can learn from each personality and how to improve our financial organizing skills and routines so we can become more like 'Prepared Pattie" in time for next years tax filing deadlines... See no boring tax rules here!
Join me next week when we talk about Edith's adventure!
