Lost and Found: The Kitchen Counter
Kitchen are the heart beat of the household. We congregate there, get our nourishment there and check-in with family members around the dinner table. Most would agree it's the central hub of the house.
Kitchen counters are a space in the home that is shared by everyone. Unfortunately everyone has different expectations on how to use them. But one thing is for sure, papers tend to collect here, hoping to be dealt with some day in the future. Unfortunately, someday rarely comes and the stacks can get to be a little daunting.
My girlfriend Kimberly was tired of the paper that kept accumulating in her kitchen. And one day she'd had enough. She decided to implement a wonderful tool I refer to as an open file box. It works wonders. Keep in mind that this file box is not used for long-term storage. It's a living, breathing tool to help manage your on-going activities of your busy household.
These file boxes are designed to hold hanging file folders. I suggest you start out with a file folder for each member of the family. They'll appreciate having a "home" to place items/documents that they feel are important to keep. Other files that I've included in my counter-top file box are:
- School (one for each child's school)
- School forms for signing (Teach your child that it's his/her responsibility to put necessary documents here; it'll be your job to make sure they get signed.)
- Take-out menus
- Places to Go (wedding announcements, tickets for a future event, brochures for the local science museum or children's museum, etc.)
- Bills to pay
- Church Directory
- Sports (this is for football, golf, basketball schedules and other related information)
- Politics – both my husband and son are involved in politics so this gives them a place to store their meeting notices, etc.
- Work – I created a file for our son's part-time job so when he gets his schedule and list of subs, he's got somewhere to put it.
This file box will never get full. That's right. Never. Why? Because it is managing the current activities of your family so things will constantly be coming and going from it. You'll now have a "home" for pieces of stray papers that need your attention in the near future.
Happy filing!
