Your attitude - be prepared - the ultimate in organizing?

But what should you be prepared for? The short response is to expect anything when you're traveling with kids.

Yes, they will get tired.
Yes, they will get hungry.
Yes, they will need different activities to keep them occupied.
Yes, they do know which of your buttons to press when you're tired.
Yes, they are in a unfamiliar situation, so they may be excited or scared.
Yes, they may misbehave or they may behave.

After you've taken care of the planning, the packing, the pre-trip organization of all the things you would normally take care of if you were at home and you NEED your vacation, then you have to actually travel.

It seems obvious, but the more relaxed you are, the more relaxed your kids will be and the more likely you are to all enjoy the experience. If you have taken the time to organize your travel, you will more likely be in a place where you can enjoy the trip.

If you can take on the philosophy from Meher Baba, popularized by the song by Bobby McFerrin - "Don't worry, be happy" - you'll also be doing a lot of people a favor. Accept that your kids will spill food, that they'll need yet another story about what their favorite characters did when they were on vacation, that they'll likely have a meltdown about some extremely seemingly trivial matter. Roll with the punches, and come back up bouncing!

If you can maintain a sense of calmness around you as you travel, you just may be surprised by what you notice, and what your kids notice. There seem to be more "learning moments" when you are traveling - either because you are in such close proximity to your children, or the new environments you are in provides experiences that you wouldn't normally experience at home.

And therein lies the joy of traveling with your kids. If you are open to the experience, you will likely discover many jewels along the way.

Enjoy!
