S.P.R.I.N.G. Cleaning
It's spring time. Are you thinking of Spring Cleaning? Me either. When I was a young girl growing up on a farm, this was the time of year that my mom insisted that we clean the house from top to bottom, including washing walls. Ugh!
While I may joke about skipping spring cleaning, I must admit that I do prefer to have a clean house; I just don't like the process of getting it clean!
I was recently on a TV spot here in Minnesota and gave the following tips to help in getting ready for spring cleaning. I used the S.P.R.I.N.G. acronym.
S – Stay focused. Use a timer if you have to in order to stay put in an area that you're working in. You might decide that thirty minute increments or even 2-hour blocks of time work for you.
P – Purge. We all have 'stuff" that needs to be thrown away, donated or returned to whomever we borrowed it from. Now is the time to go through your belongings and see what needs to go.
R – Repairs. Am I the only one that puts up with a broken light switch month after month after month? This is a great time of year to call your handyman and let him fix the things that have been ignored. If you need a resource for finding a handyman in your area, check out Angie's List.
I – Incentive. Find something that you can look forward to after your spring cleaning is all done. It might be tickets to a play or sporting event, dinner out with a friend, a new purse. It doesn't have to be anything expensive – just make it something you can get excited about.
N – Never alone. Ask a friend to share your spring cleaning duties in exchange for you helping them out too. It's always more fun when you clean with a friend and it never seems like work when you're doing it in someone else's home.
G – Gravity Rules. When you're cleaning, always start at the very top. I.e. top of the refrigerator, book shelf, cabinets, etc. Many times this area is overlooked because it's above eye level. As you clean from the top, dust and dirt will fall to the ground so obviously, vacuuming will come last.
Happy Cleaning!
