Your Briefcase/Tote The Mobile Office

I traveled extensively for a while -- I traveled every week for 9 months, took a break, then went back and traveled every week for 7 months. This was also when my two kids were between the ages of 0 3.  I learned to keep my briefcase organized!

Here are some tips to keep your briefcase (your mobile office) organized:

  • Your briefcase should have defined activity areas, just like your office.  At the very least, you should think in terms of your briefcase or purse having designated area for permanent versus transient items
  • While traveling, consider using file folders with sides, so that your papers don't accidentally slip out the sides and get crumpled by your briefcase
  • While in the airport waiting, sit next to a trashcan and clean out your briefcase.  Keep a copy of your file drawer index in your briefcase, sort papers, and put a Post-it on the paper where it should be filed to support quick filing when you return
  • In your home, always keep your briefcase in the same location (remember one consistent home for everything), so you are ready to hit the road.  Keys too
  • Establish consistent activity areas in your hotel room, so that you always designate the same spot (or type of spot) for your briefcase, laptop, important papers, books, etc.
  • Always put your hotel key and garage parking ticket in the same spot in your wallet, briefcase or bag.  Ask the hotel for 2 keys, if you like one in your briefcase and one in your wallet
