Gilbert and Teresa are angels
Our friends Gilbert and Teresa owns a cabin/house up at Kernville. They bravely invited 3 families to stay last weekend for the Kern River Festival.
We had 5 children - one 4 1/2 year old, twin 2 year olds and two 14-15 month olds and all their parents (6 of us) converging on the cabin on Friday night and Saturday morning.
Normally Gilbert loves managing the people who stay at his cabin, encouraging them to get up and go kayaking. This weekend, he just threw up his hands and said "They're on kid time" and let us go! Feeding time was a little hectic with so many people, it was hard for the little ones to concentrate on actually eating, but I think they all managed to get something into them for each meal. For breakfast, Gilbert had done his usual Costco run for muffins and croissants. Various requests for sausages, eggs and oatmeal were fulfilled by various parents.
We'd all brought our own lunch food which we ate at somewhat overlapping times down at the park in Kernville. The park in Kernville is situated right next to the river where a slalom was set up for the festival. Most of the parents were paddling. Some, like my husband and I, simply took turns on the slalom course and our family hung out for the day. A couple of the other parents went upstream to do a longer run, leaving the rest of the family to hang out, enjoy the festival atmosphere, play on the playground, and do a little splashing in the river.
After several emails flying around the week before, dinner time was pizza all round, although, I have to give credit to Phil and Meredith for also bringing veges for their son (Meredith has a PhD in nutrition) and to Janice and Scott for having their sons' special dietary needs taken care of. We just figure our kids had been eating fruit during the day, they get plenty of veges during the week, so what's one meal without green things in it?
Bed time was remarkably smooth - all the kids were worn out after playing all day and for the most part happily went to sleep! Which was great as we were able to celebrate Teresa's birthday in relative peace and eat all the cheesecake ourselves!
Sunday was a similar day, leaving mid-afternoon to get the kids home in time for bed. All in all a great weekend. And really, not too much planning involved.
We're going up to the river again this weekend - camping this time. I've re-packed our bags already. Just the camping stuff to sort now!
