A Million Ways to Organize a Bookshelf

Yes, I love to read books on organizing! Out of all the organizing books I've read, the item that the experts seem to disagree on the most is "how to organize your books." I've read 20 different BEST WAYS. The conclusion….there is no best way to organize your books. There are a million different ways that are logical and reasonable. So you should feel confident using whatever method works best for you.

Here's my personal favorite and other professional guidance on bookshelves:

Store books by category and within the category by height. You can easily find what you want and it looks neat. Bookends can separate categories

Bookshelves can be purchased at furniture stores (e.g., Ikea, unfinished furniture shop), specialty stores (e.g., Container Store, Pottery Barn), and department stores (e.g., J.C. Penny). Bolt or latch bookcases to the wall, if taller than 4 feet

The best wall shelving for heavier items, such as books, is a mount/track rail and bracket system (e.g., Container Store (elfa), Rubbermaid, ClosetMaid). Recommend a shelf support bracket at least every 32 inches and at least a ¾ inch shelf thickness

One or two oversized books can prevent bringing an entire set of shelves closer together for increasing space. Lay the oversized books flat on the end of a bookshelf

Line up books to the front of the shelf to look polished and allow airflow behind books

Magazine file holders are perfect for grouping publications and fit neatly on shelves

Label the edges of shelves. Library label holders (sold at Levenger) nicely hold a label on the edge of a shelf and easily slide/move when books need to be rearranged
