MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR WEEKENDS
Weekends comprise one third of your life, so planning them is a truly important part of time management. Weekends are a critical time for the family to reconnect, to nurture individual members, and to strengthen itself on the whole. Unfortunately, too many families underestimate their importance and passively plod through them.
Have-to's and housework often overlooked during the week are jam packed into Saturday - and maybe even Sunday – especially when both parents work outside the home. Then to add to the pressure there are children's activities, social obligations, and extended family commitments. Whew!
The chaos can be controlled, however, to benefit your family, your marriage, your career, and yourself. Begin by having a good week. Try to discipline yourself to spend an hour every weekday evening on household tasks; your reward will be a free weekend where you can pursue personal and family leisure activities without a guilty conscious.
Some experts recommend that we learn to live with less-than-perfect housekeeping standards, break the weekday work into manageable parts and delegate chores. If at all possible, don't take work home from the office on weekends. Maybe if you spend an extra hour a day in the office during the week you can free yourself up to really relax on the weekend.
Studies have shown that workers who can leave their jobs behind at least one day over the weekend are more productive upon returning to work. To prevent "burnout" we all need to recharge our batteries on the weekend.
If you really must bring work home, try doing it right after the children have gone to bed or set aside "homework time for the whole family" and while the kids do their school studies you can do your office work – preferably all in the same room!
