Snappin' and Scrappin'
Most people have made the switch to digital cameras. They're easy to use, they take great photos and you can immediately see if your picture turned out the way you wanted it to. Lately I've been hearing people talk about how they either store their pictures in their cameras (or just keep buying more photo cards) or download them onto their computers but then never print and enjoy them.
In recognition of May as National Scrapbooking Month, I wanted to touch on the topic of backing up digital photographs.
If you store your photos on your computer (as most of us do), then make sure you're backing up your computer on a regular basis. Years ago we had negatives to fall back on but not anymore. Remember, it's not IF your computer crashes, it's WHEN.
You can back up your photo files on flash (thumb) drives or burn them onto CDs. Either way, make sure you store your backups somewhere safe, not on a bookshelf near the computer! You can either store them in a fire-proof safe designed to store electronic data, in a safety deposit box, or in another location away from home. I know one person who stores them at her office. Another great option is to use an online back-up service such as www.Carbonite.com. For about $1 per week this service will back up your computer files, making restoration a breeze in the event of a crash.
Another option to storing your photos is to store them online with free services such as
www.myphotoalbum.com , www.myphotobucket.com and www.zoomonga.com. Most of these sites offer photo printing in addition to unlimited storage – a great way to insure backup copies of your prized possessions.
Happy Snappin!
