Make THE MOST OF YOUR WEEKENDS - PART 3
When was the last time your family tried something new? Can't remember? Then it's time to plan at least one fresh weekend adventure per month.
How about a trip to a children's museum? These museums are wonderful for the whole family with all the hands-on activities that accompany the exhibits!
Then there are always theatre's geared especially for children by keeping performances to about an hour and the zoo or parks are awaiting your visit. An overnight campout could spell adventure, visits to nearby historical sites, or even a jaunt through the town cemetery to read tombstones costs little or nothing.
What about a family walk through an unexplored area where there's bound to be something new to discover. Following a creek through nearby woods can usually offer interesting nature observation. A hike is good for the whole family for your health, your marriage, and it's good to your pocketbook.
Whatever you choose balance your time in the planning. Shoot for equal time for personal, family, and couple time. Believe it or not the most important time on weekends is as a couple. Too often weekends are heavily weighed toward children's activities, so guard against becoming a chauffer or spectator. Perhaps you could limit one activity per child that requires weekend practice or meetings, thus allowing Mom and Dad to take a walk or go for a drive together at a certain time during the weekend. With a conscious effort children can be raised to realize that the entire family's well-being is in a secure "root system" of a husband and wife relationship.
Another main ingredient is time spent one-on-one with children. One child and one parent often bring out entirely different reactions that are seen when the whole family is together. Informal talks during walking or fishing are often more memorable than formal discussions in the dining room.
