MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR WEEKENDS - Part 4
Children grow up so fast that the next thing you know they're moving away! During the teen years "special handling" is sometimes required because it's natural that they are beginning to gravitate away from the family as a whole. No family member should be pressured or forced to be involved in every family gathering…and you need not even worry if an adolescent drifts away from "old-time family traditions" for a time. Strange as that may seem, it's often difficult for a teen-ager to realize that they really do want to do things with the family.
You might try "inviting" your teen and his or her friends to share in your family activity. The friends may even be in need of some "family time" and, even though they may seem disinterested in the beginning, they may very well become enthusiastically involved by the end.
For many families an essential part of every weekend is time spent at a religious service and/or activities. When an integral part of life, basic faith can make the weekend seem out of sync if church isn't attended on Sunday morning. All will feel the effect that something very important is missing for the rest of the entire week.
Healthy family esteem results when activities center around three main ingredients:
· Helping family members achieve their own individual goals to full potential.
· Building a spirit of togetherness and teamwork.
· Reaching out as a family to friends, community, and country.
By participating in family functions a child is helped to find his or her identity and grow in confidence to face whatever the world throws at them. Parents benefit, too, when they observe their children develop successfully – their own sense of inner strength expands.
Bottom line: Families can grow stronger by well-planned weekends.
