PayPal Theft

I guess it was my turn.  After 10 years with Paypal, my account was hacked into over the weekend and several unauthorized transactions made - all within the space of an hour.

Fortunately the total dollar amount wasn't terrible, and I was able to freeze my account very quickly in order to stop the bleeding.  The dispute department was very helpful and quick to respond and assured me that the funds, if dispersed, would be returned to my account just as soon as the account was investigated.

As an organizer who educates my clients on identity theft, however, this little incident was enough to remind me that I needed to take my own advice.  I had not changed my password or updated my security questions in quite sometime.  That may have been the advantage - who knows?

Although PayPal touts itself as one of the most secure payment sites on the web, it is obvious that fraud can happen - and does.  And when it happens to you, security claims don't mean all that much.

A few tips then:

Change (ahem!) your passwords and security questions regularly.  Most banks, investment accounts, and credit card companies have increased online security.  Although sometimes navigating through it is annoying, it is there for a reason.

Shred ALL sensitive material - and not just papers with account numbers or social security numbers.  Shred anything that even has your address and phone number on it.

Do a hard reset on your cell phone to permanently erase all data before you donate it.  I was amazed when a client gave me some old cell phones to donate.  When I asked his permission to check them - NONE of his contacts had been erased.  He even had emails and account numbers -  all easily visible by just turning on the phone.

Same thing with your computer - remove the hard drive and destroy it before recycling.

Do not enable your computer to automatically remember passwords and/or account numbers.
