Maximize Your Time by Optimizing Your Hard Drive
Do you ever get frustrated because your computer takes too long to respond to your mouse clicks or keyboard commands? Maybe it's not your computer's fault! When is the last time you ran a defrag on your hard drive?
There is no hard and fast rule as to how often you should defrag – ask around, and answers will range from "every day" to "every month" because it really depends on the way you use your computer. If you frequently install or uninstall software, delete files, or even move files around, you will need to do it more often than someone who typically just logs onto the Internet. With today's bigger hard drives, it can take quite a bit of time to run a defrag, so it's best to start it before you go for lunch or begin working on a project that doesn't require access to your computer.
I used to defrag once a week, but stopped when I bought Norton 360, because it supposedly runs a defrag automatically as needed. However, I was getting increasingly annoyed with my computer's response time, and clued in that there's no way Norton could be doing in 20 seconds what would take Windows 40 or more minutes to do, so I ran a proper Windows defrag and was thrilled at the results. That was two or three weeks ago, and I'm noticing that my system is starting to slow down, so I guess it's time for me to do it again.
If this is all new to you, don't worry – you don't have to be a techie to run a defrag! Simply click on Start - Programs – Accessories – System Tools – Disk Defragmenter, then click on the Defragment button. Now go and take a break – you need to get off your computer once in a while anyway!
