Your Body is Your Guide to Making Decisions


If you haven't worked out in a long time, you wouldn't sign up to run a marathon next week. But if you started training for it, your body would adapt. Fat is lost, muscle mass is built. These changes allow the body to function more efficiently.


This concept covers all human functioning, including decision making. Think of it this way. People have good days and bad days. There are days when everything seems to be going wrong. The universe is conspiring against you. Nothing seems to be working. What do you do?  Think about the self-talk you might use for a day like that.  You might feel

  • weighed down
  • feeling down
  • the weight of the world on your shoulders
  • cramped
  • confined


People get tension headaches and aches and pains from tension.


When things are going well...

You feel on top of the world.  Everything seems to work out with almost no effort on your part.  You make decisions easily.  You may feel:

  • light
  • like you are walking tall
  • holding your head high  
  • like you are fluid, and graceful


These phrases are expressions of what's happing in your physical body. 

The mind-body connection is a powerful one, even though we're not often aware of it.  Your thoughts affect your body.  And moving your body in different ways affects how you think.

Don't believe it?  How about when you take a break from your desk to get a breath of fresh air, and a few minutes later a creative idea or a solution to a problem pops into your mind.  You've shifted your body position and this causes your mind to think in a different way.


Here are some examples of body wisdom:

  • Shake it off
  • Sleep on it
  • Let's step away from it for a moment
  • Have a breather


We talk this way when we want to distance ourselves from some issue. We inherently know that moving our body in different ways gives us different ways of thinking.

Can you apply body movement to help you have more good days? Absolutely.  When you're on your game, your body moves in a certain way. Pay attention to how you position yourself the next time you're having a full on great day. 

You'll see you have a very solid internal sense of who you are. You're in a great position to understand how to make a decision, because the "You" that's making it is operating at it's best!
