Blog: The Nature of Being Organized
The Power Of Doubt
Doubt is a powerful emotion. It will stop us dead in our tracks from completing important tasks. It's the energy behind procrastination, avoidance, and overwhelm. It's what creates the piles of paper, the overflowing laundry basket, the cluttered attic or garage; doubt blocks our ability to make clear decisions about moving forward.
When we wait for the "perfect" time or situation to get something done doubt is present. Many times doubt pops up when we're faced with a challenge; something we've never done before. Facing anything for the first time can be an anxiety provoking experience. But how many "first times" have we had? We're still around to tell about them, too. My guess is they probably weren't perfect experiences either.
Doubt sets up a struggle. We don't have to struggle to get what we want in life. I love this quote by Ralph Marston:
"Struggle is not a specific condition or action. It is a label that casts a negative spin on your efforts and unnecessarily puts you at a disadvantage."
"Unnecessarily puts you at a disadvantage", this speaks to our thought process when it comes to delving into a task, project, or situation. What we choose to think about our projects or tasks will make all the difference in how we experience them and when they'll get done. If we choose to think that a situation is impossible, drudgery, or unfair it will not go away and it can only get even bigger!
We can recognize that doubt is present by tuning in to our body. Doubt is very heavy energy as opposed to the lightness we experience when we hear our favorite song on the radio. We can move beyond doubt by recognizing it, expressing it, and choosing to "look it in the eye". Think about the last time you doubted yourself. What did you do to get beyond it?
When we recognize that doubt is present the only course of action is to act! When we take the very first step and then the next and the next, before we know it we have accomplished the task. It's so simple when we step back and get a fresh perspective. We have the power and choice to do that every time. We don't need to be victims of our projects and tasks. We can choose to put ourselves at an advantage by connecting with our inner wisdom and allowing that energy to guide us forward.
My coach's challenge for you this week is to take one step forward around a task you've been avoiding. Let me know what happens!
Happy Organizing!
Warmest Regards,
Maggie
