TIME TESTED TIPS TO REKINDLE JOY IN LIFE
Studies have suggested that positive upbeat people earn more money, do better in school, are healthier and perhaps live longer than pessimists. So, what makes optimists tick? Even though many have suffered crushing setbacks, they learned techniques for defeating dejection and keeping their enthusiasm up during difficult lows. Consider some time-tested ideas to get more from your life.
Begin by rehearsing success. Optimists always picture themselves accomplishing their goals. Warren Bennis and Burt Nasus report interviews of people in top leadership positions, in their book Leaders. Certain distinct characteristics distinguish them from the general public. The author's observation is that they don't think about failure. They don't even allow themselves to use the word, but instead rely on such synonyms as glitch, mess, error, and false start – never failure. These positive thinkers focus on the positive. Blaming everything on circumstances isn't their style and they have discovered that actions can make a difference.
Author Thomas Carlyle entered his darkest days when a maid mistakenly used the only copy of his manuscript to start a fire. He sank into deep despair. The, gradually, word by word, sentence by sentence, paragraph by paragraph the classic was rewritten thus reconstructing "The French Revolution."
Maybe you can't control your job, but you just might be able to make other changes in your life, like taking a class, beginning a special family night, or starting an exercise program. In the words of Helen Keller, born blind, "I find life an exciting business – and most exciting when it is lived for others."
