Blog: Technology As An Organizing Tool
Building a Better Blog Reader
A few months ago, I was delighted to discover that "My Yahoo" has an RSS reader built into it. After that, I enthusiastically began signing up for more and more blogs to read. The main drawback I found was that Yahoo merely put each new addition at the bottom of the page, and I wasn't able to organize the blogs into categories. When I asked what tools other people use for monitoring blogs, Bloglines was suggested by a number of people, including my VA colleague Amanda Moore. I signed up for a free account and immediately began setting up my categories and my feeds. Unfortunately, I overlooked the fact that I could have just imported the feeds from My Yahoo, but c'est la vie! I now have Bloglines set as my default RSS reader, so when I come across a blog that interests me, I can just click on "subscribe in a reader" and add it to the appropriate category.
One exciting feature is the ability to designate feeds as either public or private. This in turn allows me to post all my public feeds on my own blog, something I will be putting in place on a new blog I will be launching very soon. This will provide my blog visitors with a more organized, more comprehensive, and more up-to-date listing of the blogs I read than I have offered to date, when I've had to manually add and delete them.
Bloglines also has a number of other options which I have barely begun to explore, such as:
- Reading suggested blogs in a number of popular categories
- Subscribing to specific search terms – I can see this would be an amazing time saver!
- Keeping track of news, weather, package shipments and much much more!
If you read more than a few blogs, or if you'd like to read more blogs but don't know how to stay on top of them, I strongly encourage you to try out Bloglines!
