What Does Being Organized Look Like

On Thursday and Friday, I had the opportunity to get away to the T Bar M Ranch in New Braunfels for the National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO) Leadership Retreat. In spite of being drenched by the remnants of Hurricane Dolly, we had a great time and got to witness many examples of how good organization can keep a group (even a group of 17 women on a mini-vacation!) punctual and productive.
There were many things that met my own personal definition of what it means to be well organized.  The board books were perfectly prepared in advance with good labels, the leader knew exactly what she wanted to accomplish with each session and we stayed right on schedule.  However, during lunch on the last day, I ran into a system which challenged my own ideas of organization.
Across the table, a friend and fellow business owner was sharing a weekly planning tool that she developed for her own use.  With what I could see from a distance (this was a very, very large table) I was thinking things like – too complicated, too much time and energy required to maintain the system, overwhelming, too many big rocks. . .
So, of course, I put on my organizer hat and rushed in to save the day.  We sat down and looked at the tool in greater detail and talked about how she had been using it for short term planning and then filing each week's sheet to serve as a record of her company's progress.  After a few minutes, feeling ready to quietly prove my point about the system being too complicated, I asked "Have you actually been able to accomplish more since you implemented this system?"  The answer was a resounding, "Oh my goodness, YES!"
I think I'll stay out of this one and acknowledge that my idea of what organization looks like might not be the only one.

What I'm Reading . . .

  • "Raising Financially Fit Kids", Joline Godfrey
Common sense ideas and insight into raising kids who are wll-prepared to manage their own finances as young adults.
  • "The Success Principles: How To Get From Where You Are to Where You Want To Be" by Jack Canfield
This book really got me excited about pursuing my goals and growing my business. There is a heavier emphasis on materialism than what I am comfortable with, but overall this is an inspiring book.
  • "The Organized Executive", by Stephanie Winston
  • "No B.S. Time Management for Enterpreneurs" by Dan Kennedy
