Getting Johnny and Suzie to Eat
Although my kids are nearly out of the nest, it seems like yesterday that we were teaching them common table manners such as asking for things to be passed to them versus standing on their chairs and reaching across for something they wanted.
When I speak to parent groups I often field questions on finicky and picky eaters and how to prevent them from visiting your home. In my What's for Dinner? DVD and workbook, I talk specifically on this topic. Here are a few of the tips which I give:
- Fix only one meal. Don't get into the habit of customizing special meals for the kids and separate ones for the adults.
- Only try fixing 1-2 new recipes each week. And when serving something new, be sure to serve other items with the meal that you know your family likes, just in case the new recipe isn't well received.
- Embrace the "we get to try something new" attitude versus the "we have to try something new".
- Involve the entire family as much as possible in the planning and preparing of a meal. Children will have a sense of ownership in it if they've had a hand in making it happen.
- If your child refuses to eat his/her meal, don't allow snacking in between meal time. They'll eventually eat when they get hungry, but only if they haven't filled up on other things.
Finally, remember that your child was born hungry, not picky. It is your responsibility as a parent to prepare their food. It is their responsibility to eat it.
Here's to a peaceful mealtime,
