Keeping track of Time
Now that it's school time again our days seem a little more "scheduled" and a little less "free". Kids can no longer sleep in and there are once again car pools to drive and places to be before that bell rings.
As your child begins to bring home papers from school, no doubt there will be things to make note of on the Family Calendar. The question is: Do you have a calendar or method of keeping track of everyone and their commitments?
Wall Calendars – These may seem old fashioned but they work. If you like this method, be sure to get one with extra writing space in the margins and post it where everyone can review it day-to-day.
Day Planners – Planners are easy to take with you to the office, doctor's office, or PTA meeting. Use a highlighter to emphasize types of appointments such as car pools or sporting events.
Microsoft Outlook – Many home computers have this software already loaded on them. And kids are intuitive enough to be able to enter their own activities, rehearsals and practices. Once my son turned about 12 I taught him to enter his own appointments. I always found it curious, though, that he never put Parent Teacher Conferences on the calendar! You can easily print out a month, day or week at a time to take with you to appointments and meetings.
Dry Erase Board – Posting one near the kitchen or entry way is a great way to make sure everyone sees what's going on. If you use a dry erase board, draw permanent grid lines with a regular marker so you don't have to re-do this part of your calendar. A neighbor of mine has four children and has assigned a different color marker to each child so all entries onto their calendar are color-coded. This makes it really easy for each kid to know where and when they're supposed to be somewhere.
Regardless of how you choose to keep track of your family's activities, it's important to find one that is easy to update and to reference.
Here's to having more time!
