Back to School – Welcome Routines!
Okay, let's be honest. Some of us could hardly wait for back-to-school time to arrive. Right? Don't get me wrong. I love summer and the freedoms that come with it. No need to be checking on things like car pools, music practice, and homework projects.
My two kids are seniors this fall – one in college and one in high school. Needless to say, this is a very exciting year for both of them. My son remarked a few weeks ago that he needed to start getting to bed a little earlier so he wouldn't have such a tough time once school started again. Yeah – I think some of my teaching has paid off!!
Routines help us to stay on track, focus and stay organized. They help our kids too, whether they are 6, 17 or 21. I think two of the most important areas to have routines established are bedtime and homework.
Bedtimes: If your child is 12 or older, purchase them an alarm clock and turn over the responsibility of waking in time for the bus to your child. Encourage them to get to bed early enough to get a good night's sleep.
Homework: Many parents have guidelines about screen time vs. homework time. Take it a step further and set up what we refer to as Homework Central. In a plastic bin or box place all the school supplies your child may need in order to get their assignments done. Include things like tissues, batteries, calculator, pens, pencils, recipe cards, marker, dictionary, compass, paper.
Enjoy your kids and this busy time of year.
