Benefits of Using an Electronic Calendar

Lately I've been contemplating my usage of the Microsoft Outlook calendar and whether it's still the best choice for me. It's important to occasionally take time to review all of your systems to make sure that they're still working for you and to make any necessary adjustments.

I enjoy many of the benefits which apply to all electronic calendars, particularly the ability to copy and paste (or drag and drop) information from emails, websites, and documents directly into my calendar, which saves me both time and paper. I also appreciate being able to quickly, easily, and neatly change the date and / or time when a meeting or other event is rescheduled.

Since switching to Outlook 2007, I've made good use of the To-Do Bar, which displays tasks according to when they are due, right next to my Inbox where I can't miss them. Another fantastic feature in this latest version is that when emails are flagged with a follow-up date, they automatically appear in the To-Do bar, without the need to make them into Tasks. I've recently developed the habit of flagging every email which requires an answer to reduce the possibility that I'll lose track of an opportunity or a client project that's in the works. Marking my tasks with colour-coded categories (e.g, clients, networking, marketing, etc.) helps me to easily identify my priorities.

Overall, the system seems to be working well for me, but as mentioned in my recent post about My Time Management Journey, something just doesn't feel right. To get to the bottom of this, next week I plan to look at the Disadvantages of Using an Electronic Calendar.
