Sorting & Purging Your Office

Sorting is one of the main concepts of organizing. Purging (throw away, recycle, shred, or donate) is also done on most organizing projects. There is a specific decision process that I recommend as you sort and purge, performing the hands-on organizing in your office.

When I work with individuals, I post a sign with these questions that helps with the SORTING decision process:

What is this?
Will I use it? Why am I holding onto this?
In what group does this belong?

You'll be amazed at how many things you will pick up in your office and not immediately recognize. First ask yourself: Why is this?

Next, truthfully ask yourself: Will I use it?

If the answer is no, than it is a candidate for being purged. If that makes you uncomfortable, then ask yourself: Why am I holding onto this? If the answer is because it "reminds" you of ……….., then it is memorabilia. That's fine; sort it into a pile identified as Memorabilia. Later you can review the memorabilia and select to keep the items with the strongest emotional value.

If the answer is yes, ask yourself: Why am I holding onto this? If it is something you need to do, sort it into a pile identified as Actions. Otherwise, ask yourself: In what group does this belong? Sort it into the appropriate pile (e.g., office supplies, reference books, marketing materials, computer equipment).
