How to Save Money on Your Laundry

With the prices of everything going up, we are all looking for ways to cut our bills and have our money stretch as far as possible. What better way than to cut your laundry bill and help the environment too!

Recently, I have been doing presentations for Money Smart WI, in my hometown. One of the presentations that I do is on Green Cleaning. A woman that attended one of the presentations gave me a recipe for laundry soap that is absolutely wonderful. On the way home, I stopped at the store and purchased the items and went home to create my new soap, with great success. So I thought I would pass on the great savings to you.

The best part of this, is it is not only helping the environment, but all you need is 2 Tablespoons of this per washer load, so it lasts a 'loooong' time, it works great and cleans stains too!

It is simple to mix, here is the recipe:
1 Bar of Fels Naptha Soap
1 Cup of Borax
1 Cup of baking Soda
Simply slice up the fels Naptha Bar (you can use a meat slicer or food processor) into small granuales. Add the Borax and Baking soda and mix. Simple! This will give you a yellow laundry soap that is an excellent cleaner.
TIP: Be careful with Borax around children and pets, it may be toxic to them.

Need some Starch in those shirts?
Mix 3/4 cup of sugar and 1/4 cup of water.
Simply emmerse the item in the 'starch' and dry.

How about a good 'Bleach'?
There is nothing better than lemon juice and water. Of course the bleaching action works better if you hang it out in the sun for a while, but it can be used either way.
Simply immerse the item in the lemon juice and water, let sit for about 15 minutes and the stains will disappear and you will once again have a white white material.

Good Luck ladies and 'Happy Saving',

emmerse? How about investing in spell check! Otherwise, I just found this blog, and find it very useful, with some not so obvious suggestions!

I'm not so worried about the spelling, but what about bugs that might be attracted to the sugar, especially in humid areas!! That's a pretty heavy ratio of sugar to water.

Sorry JW about the spelling error somehow I didn't catch the spelling even with 'spell check'! Clamshell: This is the recipe that great, Great grandma used to use. The way I understand it, the solution causes a stiff starch on the clothes and there isn't a problem with bugs etc. attacking the clothes. I went back and checked it with all of my sources at the retirement home and all 8 of the ladies swear by it.

Fun Things To Do

  • Fishing Lake Michigan
Whether it is by boat or off the pier, there is nothing like getting that first Coho or King.
  • Grandchildren are fun
Making memories for your grandchildren of all of the fun times they had with grandma and grandpa is one of the best memories you will make for yourself too.
  • Camping
A tent, a firepit and sitting in the woods is a campers dream. We spend a lot of time camping in Northern Wisconsin and I have tons of camping recipes to share.

TV Shows

  • American Idol
I am hooked on this show, nothing interrupts me when this is on. By the time they get to Hollywood, I already have the top ten picked out.
  • Last Comic Standing
I love to see how these people, take the judges advice and change their tactics to become great comics, instead of just a comic.
  • House
Now really, isn't he the kind of doctor you want on your side? He always has a reason for his actions, he looks until he finds the cure and he has flaws just like the rest of us.
  • Any home make over show
I get some of my best ideas off of these shows and I also find things that I wouldn't dream of doing to someone elses home. I will admit, there are times that I wish they would call me and ask for my help!
