Post-Thanksgiving Cupboard Clearing
I hope everyone had a very Happy Thanksgiving full of love, laughter, good friends and family.
Just a couple questions for ya… As you prepared your meal, did you find all the appliances, mixers, serving spoons, and dishes you were looking for in the back of your cupboard? Did you find more than you were looking for? As you set the table did you find all the table linens with matching place mats and napkins?
Besides being a time to be grateful, Thanksgiving is also a great time to re-evaluate all of the serving dishes and party supplies you have in your collection. If you used your good china this Thanksgiving, did you come across any pieces that were chipped or need to be replaced? If you didn't use your good china, when ARE you going to use it???? Did you find extra serving items that you didn't use because you don't like them or simply have too many?
If you have difficulty parting with items because you're afraid of making the wrong decision, at your next dinner party (holiday party? Christmas/Chanukah dinner?) ask your guests for a few minutes after dinner to help you decide what items you should keep and which ones should go. And as long as they're helping you part with things, perhaps you can send some of those items home with them (to be sure you don't second guess yourself and pull them out of the "donate" bag after they leave).
Sometimes it's easier to part with Grandma's china (that you never use!) if you know it's going to be added to your cousin's or sister-in-law's collection. That way someone can get use out of it, treasure it, and it still stays in the family (but out of your kitchen). Even if you can't find someone in the family to adopt the kitchen appliances, dishes, and table linens you no longer need or use, be honest with yourself about whether or not it's worth the space it takes up in your pantry.
