Rethinking "Cyber Monday"
You can learn some things listening to the radio for 36 hours.
I'm on the last leg of a 2,000-mile car trip from Baltimore to Pensacola, FL. We spent Thanksgiving with our daughter, who is stationed at Pensacola Naval Air Station. (I'm not driving as I write this!)
Since I was held captive by 3 family members whose idea of a good time wasn't going to the mall at 5 a.m. on Black Friday, I'm suffering with severe pent-up demand to go Christmas shopping. I did break free long enough to check my e-mail, however, to find a half-dozen of my favorite retailers beckoning me to ORDER TODAY. I was enticed by their offers of 20% off and free shipping. I even put a few stocking stuffers in one electronic shopping cart. But then, I heard the radio announcer – and I didn't click "Buy Now".
The announcer said something I've never heard before. He said "Don't buy your holiday gifts over the internet this year. Support your local stores and buy your gifts there."
We've all heard the dire predictions of what will happen to many brick-and-mortar retailers in January – if not before. It can be a self-fulfilling prophecy – or we can each do our part to help preserve them by SHOPPING THERE! I don't know about you, but I don't want my local stores to go away.
The Monday after Thanksgiving has recently been nicknamed "Cyber Monday" – according to another radio announcer, anyway. It is supposedly the heaviest internet-shopping day of the holiday season.
But not for me this year.
My husband and I had already decided to pay cash for our Christmas purchases this year. You can't do that if you shop over the internet! And who needs more credit-card debt these days?
I'm emptying my e-shopping cart and heading off to the mall ASAP.
