Blog: Setting And Achieving Goals
One Thing At a Time
With the new year fast approaching a lot of you are going to start making resolutions for the new year. Getting into shape, going more 'green', spending more time with family, blah blah blah. You are more than welcome to make your resolutions, but we aren't going to talk about those today. Only because I seriously don't like setting myself up for failure. It's just not my idea of a good time. So if you are thinking about adding "getting more organized" to your list of resolutions, do me a favor and don't.
Instead of doing a blanket resolution of getting more organized, find one little thing that is so simple, something you can realistically do and then commit to it. For example, one of the things I would like to get better with is making my bed every morning. I don't know why I don't do it now, because I seriously have enough time to throw the blanket to the top of the bed. I'm not a restless sleeper so my bed isn't trashed in the morning. It's just one of those things I haven't set as a priority. I am also not going to wait until January 1 to implement my new change.
Instead, this morning I actually got up and made my bed! It actually looks pretty dang gone good and I didn't slack off on it! So kudos to me!
What are some of the other little things in your life that you would like to start working on? Do you want to make an effort to always put your shoes away instead of kicking them off in the living room? How about cleaning out the inbox every day before you go home from work? It doesn't matter what "it" is, just make it simple. Make it something attainable. Make it something worth working on.
Once you have your attainable goal down pat, pick up something else small to work on. You don't have to be an instant organized success over night and you certainly don't need to have your entire life in one controlled environment. Instead, think of your priorities, your habits now, the routine of your family. What do you want to enhance and what really has no merit whatsoever on your happiness?
Having a tidy bed does make me smile and happy as I walk through my house during the day. I work from home so I look at it constantly, but the kids having PS2 games scattered on the living floor doesn't bother me. Can I scream, holler and nag for the kids to pick them up? Sure, I could. Is it very easy to put them away? Yep, it sure is. But it's not disrupting our lives and I'm ok with it. Does it go against the grain of every organizing book out there? Pretty much! But it's MY life. MY environment. MY routine. I am certainly not going to beat myself up over a few games and a glass on the table. Put that glass in my sink and I'll kill you where you stand, but if you want to set on the counter so be it.
Get to know yourself. Figure out the little things that will make a difference. And make the adjustments. Remember, just do one little thing at a time.
