DON'T PROCRASTINATE - PRODUCE!
Procrastinators often feel defeated by the immensity of a task, so they put off even starting it. To remedy the problem you should break down the large overwhelming goal into a series of smaller, more easily accomplished activities. Then, set a schedule for yourself. Allot a specific time each day or week to work on some aspect of the project. Make appointments with yourself on your calendar – then keep the appointment!
Procrastinators tend to have a non-realistic sense of time so a tight schedule will be half the battle. Once a schedule is set, check in with yourself daily to make sure you're on target. Try to tackle your most dreaded task early in the day, because when it's accomplished you'll feel as if a weight has been lifted off your shoulders, and you'll have more energy for the rest of the day.
To stay on track give yourself a pat on the back once in awhile. No one wants to do something they don't enjoy, so build in rewards to reinforce your progress. Rewards can range from tangible to edible types to a special phone call to catch up on a friendship. Some of us need a little help from our friends.
One reason we continue in our procrastination habit is because others allow us to. When an understanding boss or softy professor lets us off the hook too easily, granting us an extension, we've been inadvertently reinforced in our poor time management.
The next time you're having trouble enforcing your own plan; enlist the help of a trusted friend or colleague. Tell your friend not to go with you on a coffee break if you haven't made 10 phone calls. Your friends company and the coffee break will serve as a reward when you've finished the calls, plus you'll have the satisfaction of having produced…not procrastinated!
