Blog: Technology As An Organizing Tool
Using Technology to Organize Your Job Search
Since I blogged about Jobfiler last year, I've learned about several much more powerful online job search organizers. If you or someone in your family is looking for work, using one of these tools will make it much easier for you to keep track of your applications, interviews, contacts, and follow-ups.
JibberJobber was developed by IT professional Jason Alba during his own job search, when he was frustrated by the lack of tools for job seekers to manage and organize their job search. He offers various payment options, ranging from a free version to a lifetime membership, which would be ideal for someone whose work tends to be seasonal or contract-based.
The Job Tracker only has one level of service, but discounts are available for college students, recent graduates, and individuals who opt for longer subscriptions and/or automatic renewals. They don't offer a free trial, but a video demo is offered on the site.
Virtual Job Coach gives you a free seven-day trial, after which you pay on a month-to-month basis. It takes things a step further by incorporating a resume and cover letter wizard, but as VA to a number of professional resume writers, I've seen the magic they can do, and trust me, recruiters can spot a resume template a mile off. You need a resume that shows off your uniqueness, not one that looks like everyone else's!
PerfectJob Online is the newest addition to the fold. Formerly available only as downloadable software, founder and president Steve D. Davies wanted to "make it even more convenient for job seekers to access, especially as unemployment numbers escalate." To introduce the new version, PerfectJob Online will be available for free now through February 22, 2009. Registration is open to all US residents until February 7, 2009. At the end of the introductory period, users can opt-in at a reduced rate, or opt-out with no obligation.
If you're out of work and watching the pennies, keep in mind that a well-organized approach to your job search can shorten the time needed to land your next position, so your investment in an online job search organizer can end up paying for itself in the long run.
