Blog: Use Your Space & Conquer Office Workflow
Where to Put my Home Office
The Washington Post newspaper came out with an article this past Thursday (1/29/2009) about where to place your home office. There were a couple of interesting facts:
-
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, "more than 20 million people work from home at least once a week"
-
The president of Burch Builders Group states, "almost every home his company builds now includes an office"
But what if you're not planning to buy a new home this year, how do you find space for a home office. Here are the most popular options:
-
Use an unused spare bedroom for an office
-
Use a portion of the guest bedroom as an office (how often do you have guests?)
-
-
Use a portion of your bedroom for an office (be careful here; there are downsides to this option)
-
Use your kitchen table for an office
-
Convert a closet or space under the stairs into an office
No matter where you chose there are 3 items required for a home office: 1) Surface space - ideally 59 inches wide and 33 inches deep, 2) A file system, and 3) Place to store office supplies. If your computer is part of your office set-up, you'll also need a power supply.
