Blog: Use Your Space & Conquer Office Workflow
Office (Organized) vs Home Office (Non-Functional)
As a Professional Organizer when I work with someone in his home office or home information center (office in the kitchen/dining room), eventually he always says, "My office space at work is so much more organized. You wouldn't believe the difference." I believe him; he's not lying to me! His work office in a commercial location is probably sufficiently more organized. But why?
Certainly one reason is that one is a public vs. private space. Another is that people don't give themselves permission to set-up a functional workspace at home. They don't dedicate the resources needed to manage the processes (e.g., mail) and papers at home. Think about how many file drawers you have in your commercial work environment. How many do you have at home? Are there office tools you use at work such as step sorters or paper bins? Do you have any of these tools in your home?
Truly consider dedicating a weekend to get your home workstation set-up with the proper space, file storage, and office tools (e.g., even Post-Its). It's worth dedicating the time. By having more order in your home, it will reduce your stress and give you a greater sense of being in control.
