Using Technology to Organize Your Books

One of my favourite websites is The Internet Movie Database (IMDb), and I wrote a post about it, Organize Movies the Easy Way, some time ago.

Around the same time, I was delighted to discover a site called Internet Book Database (iBookDB), but I didn't mention it on my blog, because it was still fairly new and didn't have a lot of content yet. I've been back recently and am pleased to see that it has come a long way!

Although not as powerful or glitzy as IMDb, iBookDB is an extensive database of books and authors. As a member, you can create your own bookshelf showing the books you own or want to own, indicate whether you've read them or not, rate them, write reviews, and designate favourites. You can then share your bookshelf by placing a link or widget on your blog, website, or social media profiles.

If you already have an account at BookCrossing, Library Thing, or GoodReads, you can import your information from there. You can also export your bookshelf as a CSV file to import into one of these other applications.

Once you've rated quite a few books, you'll be able to generate a list of other titles that you might enjoy, based on your choices.

The site also includes author interviews, monthly contests, forums, and much more. If you're a book lover, be sure to check it out!

Hey Janet, thanks for the suggestions. I'll be sure to check them out! : ) I've been a fan of IMDB for a few years. While I still love it as a great source for information, I discovered an amazing site that lets me save all my collections in one place. It's called LivingSocial (www.livingsocal.com). This can also be linked to your Facebook applications too. I can store music, books, movies, tv shows, video games etc. It also allows you to rate, review and indicate items you'd like to read/watch etc. It also offers the ability to export the lists (something I was not able to find a way to do this from IMDB). Another site I have been checking out recently is Last.fm (formerly MP3.com). You can keep a music libary, and listen to online radio stations based on your favourite artists etc. You can also install a program on your computer that can synchronize your favourites based on what you listen to. It will also recommend other artists based on your listening history and likes. You can also share this information with other users on the site, and can make & share playlists. So many sites... so little time!

Thanks so much for sharing this! I've noticed a lot of my friends on Facebook showing their top 5 this-and-that but didn't realize it was connected to www.livingsocial.com! I will have to check that out for sure.
