MAKE PUBLIC SPEAKING PANIC-LESS
Put away the panic when public speaking and take charge! When you step up to the podium ... smile. Establish a warm relationship with your audience right away because those first few minutes are crucial.
Thank your introducer and give them a nod of appreciation. It won't take long for each member of the audience to realize you are speaking to them individually as well as to the group as a whole. This is exactly what you want.
When you're sure they're with you, scan the faces picking out one in the middle and on each side of the room. As you speak to each one of them you'll be taking in the whole room full.
Now, it's time to talk. Notice, I said "talk" ... not read. Though it may feel safer to read, it's truly much better to just talk to the audience ... directly from your heart. It may not be quite as smooth as it would be if you read it, but it will be much warmer and effective.
By saying this, I'm not saying don't have notes. Having them would be a smart thing to do. Notes will be a crutch to remind you of what you want to say and when to keep you o track with your thoughts.
Finally, relax! Crazy as it may sound when we're under stress we sometimes have to be reminded to breathe. Don't make it obvious that you're doing it by a big gulp or a fast pace I your breathing. I don't want you to hyperventilate! Just take a nice slow deep breath to relax your diaphragm and you'll feel yourself begin to relax. Everyone who performs in public knows the importance of controlled breathing. Why do you think big basketball stars take a long deep breath just before a free throw? They too know it will relax them to do their best.
Public speaking is a lot like learning to ride a bike. We all had to learn it and practice it before it became an enjoyable thing to do.
