Getting out the Spring/Summer Clothes
That time again! It is supposed to be spring- the East Coast hasn't gotten the memo quite yet, but soon enough it will be time to break out the short sleeves and sandals. Putting away sweaters and sweatpants can be a chore but organizing closets and dressers is a process that can relieve anxiety and stress. Having to look through clothes that can't be worn just takes up unnecessary time (and time is a precious commodity as all busy families know).
Here are some tips to make the seasonal clothes swap easier:
- Sort clothing into categories. When you are dealing with your child's clothes, make sure that you are purging the clothes that will not fit them (or a younger child) next year. No need to store clothes that won't be used in your home again. Donate them to a friend with younger children or a thrift store.
- Recycle. If you come across jeans with holes in them, etc. (not holes of the stylish variety, of course) you can cut them off for shorts or keep them (as we do in our home) for play pants. When you have active boys it is important to have this option!
- Choose your storage options. There are many options when it comes to storing out of season clothing. I have an old dresser for each child in our basement storage room that I keep their out of season clothes in. Some people keep them in Rubbermaid type bins and store them in the basement or attic. There are those great vacuum storage bags that are perfect for bulky sweaters and winter coats that could take up precious space.
- Put gear away. You don't need snow boots and gloves in the summer. Make sure you have a designated place to store these items so that your "coat" closet is available for windbreakers, umbrellas and an outdoor bag (I keep mine stocked with sunscreen, sunglasses, bug spray, etc).
What works for your busy family?
