Is Unused Technology Cluttering Your Office?

With almost every client that I work with on an office organizing project, we find an unused piece of technology cluttering their office. It could be a computer that is not quite working, an old cell phone from a previous provider, an old fax machine, etc.  This electronic equipment is causing clutter in the office.  Why?  As Barbara Hemphill likes to state, "clutter is postponed decisions."
Most people don't know what to do with this unused technology, so they do nothing and the equipment starts taking up valuable office space.  People hang onto technology because they think…hmmm…maybe I can have it repaired……maybe I should upgrade the computer……I'm not quite sure, I'll think about it later.
Consumer Reports' Greener Choices provides the following guidance for getting unstuck and making decisions about the unused technology.

Computer Problem                                                                                              Solution
Not performing as well as you'd like or lacks the capability to handle certain tasks     Upgrade it
Either broken or behaving erratically                                                                       Fix it
Working, but you no longer want it (preferably less than 5 years old)                         Donate/sell it
Broken, and you no longer want it                                                                          Recycle it

Nicely done... The last sentence in the article reminding not to recycle our identity is priceless. Thanks for sharing.
